Mencap's Supported Internship Programme

8th October 2019

Karl Wilson, an Employer Engagement Coordinator for Mencap's Supported Internship Programme in Leeds reached out to MPM Ltd to organise a work orientation visit for one of the groups he supports.

“This was not only a fantastic way for our learners to experience a work place environment but also an opportunity for staff at Mencap to help our learners become more familiar and comfortable with using public transport”, says Karl.

Ben and Sarah showed the group around and were delighted that they were able once more to give back to the community.

“It makes our day feel much more enriched when we see the smiles on the faces of people in our factory. This new group were enthused and it was a pleasure to be able to give them an insight into working and delighted that they felt the team spirit even though most were hard at work”
Sarah Turnbull - MPM

“For someone with a learning disability being employed is about more than having a job and an income, it increases independence and grows confidence. The aim of the visit to MPM was to give our learners the opportunity to gain an insight to different types of roles within an organisation, which they might not have come across before. An informal visit like this is a really great way to build up confidence about the workplace by showing them what it is like.

Sarah & Ben who kindly showed us around the factory were fantastic, their passion for what they do as a company really shone through and the learners all had a fantastic time, thank you so much for allowing us to visit.”
Karl Wilson - Mencap

A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – things like travelling on public transport and managing money, things which most of us take for granted – and it affects someone for their whole life.  But a learning disability does not prevent someone from being an active member of society and a productive employee, which is why, across the country, Mencap offers a range of employment support programmes for adults with a learning disability who are looking for employment as well as support for employers who want to become more inclusive.
